Biocides what they are
Presidi Medico Chirurgici (PMC) refer to a class of products including disinfectants, insecticides, insect-repellents, rodenticides and rat-killers, which require to be nationally authorised by the Ministry of Health in order to be places on the market.
The definition of Presidi Medico Chirurgici is provided by the first article of the D.P.R. n. 392 of the 6th of October 1998, which quotes:
“The present legislation regulates the procedure of the authorisation to produce and of the marketing authorisation of presidi medico-chirurigici consisting of:
- disinfectants and substances put on market as germicides and bactericides
- insecticides for domestic and civil use
- insect-repellents
- kit of reagents for the detection of anti-HIV antibodies
- kit of reagents for the detection of HBsAg and anti-HCV or other potential infection markers of HCV
- rodenticides and rat-killers for domestic and civil use
However, following the Directive 98/79/EC on medical-diagnostic in vitro devices, implemented into the Decreto Legislativo n. 332 of the 8th of September 2000, the kits of reagents (points d-e above listed) have been included in the classification of medical-diagnostic in vitro devices, thus they are not considered as Presidi Medico Chirurgici anymore.
